A fire broke out in a classroom trailer at Greensboro’s Jones Elementary School just before 5:30 this morning, causing major damage to the affected trailer and an adjoining trailer, used by 3rd Grade Spanish Immersion classes.

Published reports from the News & Record say vagrants hiding out from the cold weather overnight may have broken into the classroom trailer to seek warmth.

An excerpt:

Bea Jones, the school’s principal, said the trailers are used for third grade Spanish Immersion classes.

Two classes will be diverted to the school’s media center, one will be moved to an open classroom and another to the cafeteria. All students will eat lunch in their classrooms.

Fire and school officials were working to have the trailer most heavily damaged removed and the others reopened as quickly as possible, Jones said.

Jones said she was relieved the fire did not do more extensive damage or cause any injuries.

“We’re lucky,” she said.
