Eastern wins school improvement award (N&R)

From a GCS press release and a staff report in today’s News & Record:

Humphrey, Jr. School Improvement Award, Guilford County Schools officials said today.

The school won for “improving student achievement through sound educational practices, community outreach and collaborative relationships,” according to a press release.

This is the third year of the award, which was created to honor Humphrey, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation from 1981 until his death in 2003.

Eastern will have its name inscribed on the Hugh Humphrey cup and will display the cup on its campus until next year’s winner is announced.

It’s kind of hard to fathom that Eastern Guilford H.S., notwithstanding everything that school family has been through over the past year, was just recently labeled a “dropout factory” by a Johns Hopkins University researcher, and for this school to continue to hold its own is amazing.

E.C. 🙂
