Gorman favors expulsion for weapons (News 14)

The image “https://i2.wp.com/images.news14.com/media/2007/11/15/images/01cms_weapons.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Supt. Dr. Peter Gorman wants to EXPEL students for bringing weapons on CMS school campuses. A recent story from News 14 Carolina (with video) reports the district wants to get tougher on students caught with weapons, especially guns.

Contrast that to GCS, which hasn’t expelled a student since 2000, and seems to just tolerate it, let it be front page news the next day and continue playing defense.

See this excerpt:

CMS officials say they are taking a no tolerance approach when it comes to weapons, especially guns. In recent years, the school board has not acted on expulsion, Gorman says, but times are changing.

“We’re bringing to the board for expulsion incidents where a person has a gun, if they are selling drugs, if they assault or batter a staff member, if they are involved in a serious assault against a student, not just two kids pushing,” Gorman said.

The board will be holding an expulsion meeting this month. The district will also be looking at other large metropolitan school district to see if this is becoming a trend.

Talk about being proactive. Talk about playing offense.

E.C. 🙂
