A North Carolina superintendent is among the finalists for the top job at the San Diego Unified School District.

Terry Grier, superintendent of Guilford County Schools, was sought by the San Diego school board, according to a report by a Fox news affiliate in Greensboro, N.C.

Guilford County Schools is North Carolina’s third-largest school district. It serves more than 71,000 students and employs about 10,000 people. Grier has been Guilford’s superintendent since May 2000. He was named North Carolina’s Superintendent of the Year by the North Carolina Association of School Administrators last month.

The San Diego Unified School District is the state’s second-largest district, with about 135,000 students. Superintendent Carl Cohn steps down Dec. 31. The school board is expected to name his successor Dec. 18. –H.G.
