Save the arts and music…in Winston-Salem (FOX-8)

This from FOX-8, a story late today says that the school system will require incoming 6th graders next year to take three years of a foreign language. This apparently will come as a result of possible cuts in music and band programs. And that has parents out there disgusted.

“Language is important. I’m not saying children shouldn’t learn a foreign language,” said Dee Oseroff-Varnell, member of the Forsyth Advocates for Music Education (FAME).  “I think they should, but it’s just whether they should be required.  And if they are, will that impact their opportunity to take arts classes?”

Band students at Wiley Middle School in Winston-Salem take band five days a week.  By the time time students hit 8th grade, they’ll have to choose between continuing their 5-day-a-week band class, or try other electives in its place.

Some parents fear the new curriculum requirements will make that choice too tough.

“The important thing to remember is students still have a choice…they are taking a foreign language, and if they want to take band they are taking band,” said Barbara Zwadyk, Assistant Superintendent with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools.

According to Zwadyk, the school system is exploring different scheduling option, which includes having a 7 period to allow students to take additional electives.

Not good, folks. Not good. This most certainly WILL be an issue in the elections this year.

E.C. 🙂
