Wake County citizens “fight the power”

In Saturday’s News & Observer, the article cites critics who want all nine school board members elected at-large, and have taken their concerns to the General Assembly.

N&O excerpt:

Suburban parents and elected officials who are upset over student reassignment and year-round schools are making a power play that could help them gain control of the Wake County school board.

These groups are urging the General Assembly to change the way Wake school board members are elected. Critics of the status quo want all nine board seats to be countywide races instead of district contests in which people vote only on the one race in their area.

That notion is gaining support among parents, county commissioners and at least half of Wake’s mayors. They argue that school board members are more likely to change policies that have generated resentment if they have to win votes countywide.

“People realize that the only way to bring about change is to change the method of school board election,” Apex Mayor Keith Weatherly said.
