Excerpts from today’s N&R:

Mike Dickinson didn’t expect when he started his honors current events and government class at Northwest High School to develop the habit of quoting obscure passages from U.S. Supreme Court cases or to consider teaching history as a career.

“Coming into this class, if you would have told me I would become a constitutional nerd I wouldn’t have believed you,” said Dickinson, a senior.

In fact, the ability of Dickinson and his 31 classmates to demonstrate their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution and the American judicial system recently earned them a first-place finish in the state’s “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution” competition.

Northwest’s team will again compete in the national competition May 3-5 after winning on the state level for 12 consecutive years.

“We the People” is a national program sponsored by the Center for Civic Education, based in Calabasas, Calif.

Students compete in mock congressional hearings that assess their constitutional knowledge and interpretation.

Last year, Northwest placed ninth on the national level, the first time a North Carolina school cracked the top 10.

“It does get harder every year because our competition gets tougher,” said Ray Parrish, who has taught the senior elective course for 13 years.

The civics team has the added pressure of raising $14,000 to help cover the expenses of the trip.
